Robert Rauschenberg was influenced by the Dadaists and Surrealists in his early artistic career and exhibited several times with them during his stays in Paris. Despite a positive reception from the movement, Rauschenberg developed a skepticism towards Surrealism, although he appreciated their experimental methods such as collage and the use of chance. Mud Muse emerged from a collaboration between artists, the Art & Technology program at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and private companies. The glass tank, filled with besonite clay, is controlled by a sound system and air pressure. A pre-recorded, inaudible sound releases air pressure into the clay, causing it to bubble. The sound is a recording of Mud Muse’s own bubbling, making the work self-generating.<\/p>\n
